 Midterm Exam Study Guide

The midterm will consist of 40 multiple choice questions and one simple design drawing assignment using urban design techniques. The questions reflect the subject matter reviewed in class, Levy's textbook assigned chapters, and class notes that are posted on my class website. If you have been keeping up with the readings, reviewed the class notes, and attended class, you should be well prepared. The simple design drawing assignment will ask you to apply urban visual analysis techniques to a given site. Be familiar with the section chapter on urban design and analysis. The midterm will be taken in class and you will have the entire period. Reference to notes or books are not permitted. You don't need a blue book.

Be familiar with the major legal cases and court decisions dealing with police powers and enabling legislation, the structure of regulation: zoning ordinances and comprehensive planning, major urban planning models, and the major figures in American planning. The exam won't dwell on specifics (such as exact dates), but more on general concepts regarding the broad material we've been reviewing.

Final Exam Study Guide

6 Questions comprise the Exam. Short Essay Questions 1-5 are worth 4 points each. A Design question 6 is worth 5 points. Total 25 points towards your final grade. Please bring a 'blue book' to write you answers. You may not consult your notes or books during the exam. You are provided 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete the exam. The questions will cover the assigned Duany readings, the 100 Smart Growth Principles, and class discussions.
