Winter Quarter 2004

Nicholas C. Zaferatos, AICP, Office: esc 444; Tele: x7660

During winter quarter, students in the Campus Planning Studio will investigate public transit issues as a principle strategy for reducing the use of private vehicles, minimizing traffic and environmental impacts, and maximizing the efficient use of available university land resources for uses other than surface parking lots.  In the beginning of the quarter, you will become familiarized with past investigations in this continuum learning class (much of past student work has been posted on the class website which you will be asked to review in depth during the first week).  The majority of class time will be devoted to student group investigation and learning about public transit policies and applying those principles and techniques in order to develop a feasible and optimal proposal for a public transit system serving the Western community.

This seminar series is concerned about promoting awareness about the choices that face Western's development future and the university's role in the surrounding Bellingham community.  Students will work in small, independent groups to research issues related to Western's master plan, in particular, transit issues, and develop formal proposals for campus planning and development. Students will also contribute to the Campus planning Web Site.

First class will meet as scheduled, subsequent classes will meet based on the mutual availability of students and faculty, usually one evening per week.  For more information, please phone me at 650-7660 or drop me an email at nicholas.zaferatos@wwu.edu.

Thanks for your interest in campus planning..
