Nicholas C. Zaferatos, Ph.D., AICPPlanning Theory ESTU 472
A Contemplative
Seminar in American Planning Thought
Winter Quarter 2009 In this course, we will address concerns and contradictions in political theory, concepts of rationality, social equity and justice issues, and the relationship between "knowledge" and "action" -- a primary concern in public planning -- to support progressive social change through public planning. Emphasis is on the concepts associated with a future-oriented decision process and in the foundations of public policy. The course examines the intellectual traditions in planning thought regarding the structural transformation of society. We will delve into philosophical thought and critical thinking as it applies to planning, its assumptions, and its past performance. This course will be conducted as a discussion-intensive seminar, requiring student active participation in every class meeting. |
