2002 APA / PAW Top Honor Award
The American Planning Association and the Planning Association of Washington awarded TOP HONORS recognition in the 2002 Best Student Project competition to Huxley's 2002 Planning Studio Class. The Plan, entitled "Lummi Island Rural Character Study, was prepared by students Kristine dos Remedios, Jennifer Hansen, Lydia Powell, Heather Quelch, Taharr Safriwe, and Jennifer Sorensen. Congratulations to these top Planning Students that have brought statewide professional recognition to Huxley's Planning Program. The Planning Studio Team worked closely with the Lummi Island community and Whatcom County Planners to devise approaches for protecting the valued rural character and cultural and environmental resources of the Island. The Huxley Student Project joins the Best Professional Plans and Programs developed in 2002 in Washington State
International Sustainable Development Studies Program Awards
Huxley College's International Studies Program in Sustainable Community Development, Kefalonia, Greece (2005-2009) was the recipient of the following international Awards:
The distinguished 2009 Green Good Design Award from the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The award recognized excellence in student-based research in the preparation of the Farsa Village Sustainability Redevelopment Plan, Island of Kefalonia, Greece. The project exemplifies principles in community sustainable development, and was the product of a three-year academic service learning program which involved over 100 students from Huxley College and other American and International universities. Professor Nicholas Zaferatos directed the program and served as principle faculty. Participating faculty included WWU’s Arunas Oslapas (Industrial Design), Gigi Berardi (Huxley College), Wendy Walker (Huxley College), and Jason Levy (Huxley College). The “Good Design” program is the oldest and most widely recognized international Awards Program in design. This was the first year the Awards Program specifically recognized “Green Design” to emphasize the importance of sustainable design and to promote international awareness about sustainable design that is occurring globally. The Farsa Sustainable Development Plan was featured along with other awarded projects in the Green Good Design 2009 Exhibition, which was held in Athens, Greece, July 7- August 15, 2009.
